287 (4th Edinburgh) Squadron were pleased to welcome Wing Commander Colin McCrae, OC South East Scotland Wing, and Squadron Leader Barry McAdam, Deputy OC, to carry out their Annual Fitness Inspection (AFI) on Thursday 10th November 2011.
During the Squadron’s first parade, Wing Commander McCrae spoke to each Cadet of the Squadron individually about their achievements and their time in the Squadron. He paid particular attention to the Squadron’s group of newest recruits, finding out their motivation for joining the Corps.
After the parade, the Cadets split to participate in various activities which had been planned to show the Squadron in action. These activities included flight simulator, first aid and model construction, which are all examples of project activities the Cadets can do on an ordinary Squadron evening. The Wing Commander spoke to many of the Cadets about their projects, asking them to explain what they were doing and what they hoped to achieve at the end of their project.
On final parade, Wing Commander McCrae made some presentations. Firstly, Cadet Sergeant David Newton was presented with his certificate after successfully completing his 12 hour light aircraft flying scholarship, whilst Cpl Notley was presented with his blue gliding scholarship wings. Finally, Cadet Alex Severn was presented with her Level 1 Climbing Award Scheme after participating in the rock climbing activities at Ratho Climbing Centre, organised by Squadron Leader McAdam.
Although the formal report has yet to be completed, Wing Commander McCrae gave positive comments to the Squadron staff after final parade. He commented that he was pleased that the size of the Squadron had improved since his last visit, and remarked about the Squadron’s high level of participation in Wing events, particularly on the sporting side.
